In short
You need to get married by a celebrant to be legally married.
They will help you complete the documents you need prior to the wedding.
Some forms must be completed at least 1 month prior to the wedding.
Choose a celebrant
The first step is to choose a celebrant and decide where you want to get married:
- at the Brisbane registry with one of their registered celebrants
- at a Queensland Magistrates Court—this service is only available at certain locations
- at a location of your choice with a registered marriage celebrant.
What the celebrant will do
Your celebrant will:
- help you to complete and lodge your notice of intended marriage application, at least 1 month (but no more than to 18 months) before your wedding.
- tell you about what documents they need to see
- perform a legal wedding ceremony under the Marriage Act 1961
- register your marriage with the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages on your behalf.
