Rules for a practitioner assessment

Understand the rules for an assessment by a developmentally informed practitioner when applying to change a record of sex for a child.

If you want to change a record of sex for a child and they are under 16, there are certain rules you and the practitioner must follow.

You must

Have the relevant section of the application form completed by a developmentally informed practitioner. These practitioners include:

a health professional (not a student) registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, such as:
- doctors (medical practitioners)
- psychologists
- occupational therapists
- registered nurses
- midwives
a speech pathologist (including a provisional member) certified as a practising member of the Speech Pathology Association of Australia
a social worker who is a member of the Australian Association of Social Workers
a counsellor or psychotherapist registered with the Australian Register of Counsellors and Psychotherapists
a school guidance officer registered under the Education (Queensland College of Teachers) Act 2005 with one of these qualifications:
- a completed master's degree in guidance, counselling, mental health, or psychoeducational assessment
- general or provisional registration in the Register of Psychologists
- completed an accredited 4-year psychology program with the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council.

Have a professional complete the form if they are seeing the child for the first time.
