Borallon Training and Correctional Centre

Borallon Training and Correctional Centre is a men’s prison located at Ironbark.

The centre holds prisoners in two areas: secure and residential. Prisoners can be held on remand or once sentenced. It operates a purposeful and structured day with a wide range of services, including training, programs, employment opportunities and activities.

By creating an environment like normal learning and working arrangements in the wider community, prisoners are given the maximum opportunity for positive change.

All training, employment and industry activity focuses on addressing offending behaviour to reduce reoffending, making the community safer.

The centre provides prisoners with new skills, qualifications and work experience. It helps develop personal behaviours and provide a better understanding of standard workplace practices.

The prisoner training and employment model targets:

  • Skills: In-demand vocational skills are developed to a level which demonstrates proficiency and the ability to deploy consistently.
  • Qualifications: upskilling prisoners to meet current and future Southern Queensland skills shortages and the needs of local employers, including industries and employment partners.
  • Experience: undertaking tasks with defined quality outcomes, including working autonomously and as a team member, and working for a prolonged period of time under manager supervision.
  • Behaviour and conduct: develop attitudes, conduct and behaviours which allow people to exist and thrive in the workplace, with a focus on discipline, commitment and teamwork.
  • Appreciation and understanding: understanding standard practices and processes used in the workplace so prisoners know how things work and they gain the confidence to operate them in a normal working environment.
