Renew your driver licence

Step 1: Get your driver licence number

You'll need your driver licence number (also called your customer reference number or CRN) to verify your identity.

Step 2: Log in and confirm your identity

Log in with your Transport and Main Roads (TMR) customer details or your Queensland Digital Identity (QDI).

Step 3: Confirm your address

Step 4: Confirm if you can renew online

We’ll check your details to see if you can renew your driver licence online.

• If you cannot renew online, we’ll advise you and provide you information on what to do next.
• If you can renew online, we’ll ask you for further information about your residency, licence status and any medical conditions. We’ll use this information to confirm if you can continue.

Step 5: Choose your renewal term

Choose how long you'd like to renew your licence for:

• 1 to 5 years for an open licence
• 1 to 5 years for a P1, P2 or probationary licence
• 3 years for a learner licence.

The maximum amount of time you can choose depends on how long your photo is still valid for. For example, if your photo has 3 years left, you can renew for up to 3 years. If you'd like a longer term, you can renew in person and get a new photo.

Step 6: Pay your licence renewal

Pay using an accepted payment method. See paying for transport services.

You cannot pay for licence renewals by BPAY.

Step 7: Receive your licence

We'll email you a driver licence receipt. Use this as proof of your licence until your new card arrives by post.

Step 1: Gather your documents

You'll need to bring evidence of identity. Bring your licence if it's current or expired less than 2 years ago.

Bring extra documents if any of these apply:

• your licence expired more than 2 years ago
• your licence was lost, stolen, or destroyed
• your name has changed since your licence was last issued.

You may also need:

• a Medical certificate for motor vehicle driver (F3712), if you have a medical condition that may affect your ability to drive safely or you're 75 or over. See Healthy to drive.
• a completed Driver licence application or renewal form (F3000), if you're renewing at a police station or most QGAP offices.

Step 2: Visit a service centre

You can renew at a:

• transport service centre
• QGAP office
• police station in rural or remote areas.

If you're visiting a QGAP office or police station, call ahead to confirm they offer licensing services and if you need an appointment.

Find a service centre that offers licensing services.

Step 3: Confirm your address

Your residential address appears on the back of your new licence. It must be a Queensland address.

Your postal address is where your new licence will be posted. If you do not provide a postal address, we'll send it to your residential address.

Step 4: Choose your renewal term

Choose how long you'd like to renew your licence for:

• 1 to 5 years for an open licence
• 1 to 5 years for a P1, P2 or probationary licence
• 3 years for a learner licence.

We'll take a new licence photo if yours is due to expire before the term you've chosen. We’ll also collect a digital signature.

If a photo is required, you'll need to:

• remove glasses, sunglasses or any headwear
• maintain a neutral expression.

If you wear headwear for religious reasons, you must adjust it so that all your facial features from the bottom of your chin to the top of your forehead are clearly shown.

Transport and Main Roads may exercise its discretion to decide whether an image capture constitutes a compliant photo for a photo identification card or licence. This may include exercising discretion about whether headwear is religious headwear.

Step 5: Pay your licence renewal

Pay using an accepted payment method. See paying for transport services.

Step 6: Receive your licence

We'll give you a driver licence receipt. Use this as proof of your licence until your new card arrives by post.

Step 1: Get the driver licence renewal kit

You can renew your licence by mail if you can't get to a service centre and you are either:

• living in a remote area of Queensland
• temporarily interstate or overseas.

Download and print the Queensland driver licence renewal kit.

Step 2: Complete your kit and other related forms

Fill in your kit, but don't sign it yet. You'll sign it in front of a witness at step 4.

Complete a Specimen signature form (F2127).

You may also need to complete a Medical certificate for motor vehicle driver (F3712), if you have a medical condition that may affect your ability to drive safely, or if you're 75 or over. See Healthy to drive.

Step 3: Gather your documents

You'll need:

• photocopies of your evidence of identity documents
• an English translation, if your documents are not in English, from an approved National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) translator.
• 2 identical colour photos.

Your photos must meet all photo rules outlined in the Queensland driver licence renewal kit.

Step 4: Get your documents, photos and signature witnessed

Take your form, photocopies, and photos to an approved witness. Sign your form in front of them – they'll sign and stamp your photocopies and photos. On the photos, they must write ‘I certify this is a true photograph of [your name] in my presence’.

An approved witness may charge a fee for this.

An approved witness may be a:

• medical practitioner
• police officer
• lawyer or judge
• Justice of the Peace or a Commissioner for Declarations
• notary public or a person authorised by law to witness and sign declarations
• consular or ambassadorial officer.

Step 5: Pay for your renewal

You can pay for your renewal by either:

• including your payment with your kit (do not send cash)
• having someone pay on your behalf at a service centre, before you send your kit.

If someone is paying on your behalf, they'll need your driver licence number and the name on your licence.

Step 6: Send your kit

Post your kit to:

Check everything is in the kit before you send it. We can't process an incomplete application.

Step 7: Receive your licence

Once your renewal is processed, we'll email you a driver licence receipt. Use this as proof of your licence until your new card arrives by post.

Processing may be delayed if:

• you don't provide the right documents
• your documents, photo or signature haven't been properly witnessed
• you need a medical certificate but haven't provided one.
