School role and responsibilities

Schools don't have to support apprenticeships and traineeships for their students; it is their choice.

For those that do, their role is to:

support students to make informed decisions about appropriate pathways aligned to their chosen career goals
support the school-based arrangement
co-create a school, work and training timetable
release the student from classes to attend work or training.

At start-up they need to:

act in the student's best interests by helping them develop a senior education and training (SET) plan and choose the most appropriate apprenticeship or traineeship, aligned to their career goals
negotiate with all parties (employer, student, parent, training organisation) to establish a suitable school, work and training timetable
ensure that the student's time away from school has a genuine impact on their school timetable
advise the student if, and how much, their training counts towards Queensland Certificate of Education credits.

Ongoing responsibilities include:

releasing students from classes to attend work or training
understanding the limits for institutional training delivery
identifying and communicating any common competencies between school subjects and the qualification

- how much support your student is getting at work
- how much work your student is being provided.
