Taking native animals from the wild

Taking protected invertebrates and least concern amphibians for recreational purposes has been previously unregulated, which can threaten the conservation of a species.

A licence is now required to remove these animals from their natural environment and the animals will only be able to be purchased from a licensed seller.

Further information on licences to take protected animals can be found under wildlife permits, regulations and funding.

Only buy native wildlife from licensed sellers

Before you buy check the following:

  • ask the seller for a copy of their licence
  • check the expiry date to make sure it’s still current.
  • only purchase native animals from a swap or marketplace website that’s regulated.

If you buy a native animal from an unlicensed seller, the animal you purchase could be seized.
