In short

Civil Registration and Vital Statistics Australasia (CRVSA) is a cross-jurisdictional body working together to improve Australia's civil registrations and statistics.

CRVSA's goals are to:

  • make civil registration and statistics work better together
  • make vital data easier to access
  • advocate for a stronger, unified national system.

About CRVSA

CRVSA includes representatives from:

  • Australian registries of births, deaths and marriages (RBDMs)
  • Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)
  • New Zealand Births, Deaths and Marriages.

CRVSA works across regions to improve how Australia records key life events like births, deaths, and marriages.

The body's role is to create policies and initiatives for a seamless, unified, and reliable system that works across all levels of government.

The 3 key objectives are to:

  • improve how the national civil registration and statistics systems work together
  • understand what users need from the data and make it easier to access

CRVSA has achieved several important initiatives, such as:

  • setting up the Australian Coordinating Registry (ACR) to manage and share national datasets through government agreements
  • providing 2 national death datasets through Queensland RBDM as the ACR:
    • fact of death – used by government agencies to clean data
    • cause of death – used for research and official statistics
  • creating consistent national data access principles for registries across Australia
  • developing national standards to fix inconsistencies in birth and death datasets and improve vital statistics
  • sharing vital data with New Zealand and Pacific countries to improve data systems and help with policy and cross-border issues
