Understand the rules you need to follow when choosing a legal name.

When you register a child's birth or apply to change a name, you must follow certain rules.

Use these rules when you:

Correct. Have at least 1 name.

You cannot

Incorrect. Choose a prohibited name. This includes names that:
  • are obscene or offensive
  • are too long
  • include symbols
  • include or resembles an official title or rank such as
    • Duchess
    • Sergeant
    • Doctor
  • is a statement
  • is a political slogan.
