Pool safety

All domestic swimming pools and spas are required by Queensland law to have a properly installed and functioning pool fence and self latching gate. This legislation was introduced because drowning is the most common cause of accidental death in children aged under five in Queensland.

Around eight children drown in unfenced or improperly fenced swimming pools in Queensland every year and more than 100 children are taken to hospital as a result of nearly drowning in domestic swimming pools every year.

Practical Advice

  • If you have a fence - don't prop the gate open
  • Supervise children near water with extra diligence - remember drownings happen in silence
  • Learn CPR skills to help protect your family
