What you should know
You must get permission to conduct research using any of Queensland Corrective Services staff or facilities, offenders under our supervision, or data.
QCS Research and Evaluation Committee (REC) assesses research applications based on:
- feasibility and impact to operations
- potential value to the existing knowledge base
- alignment with our Strategic Research Agenda
- ethical and robust method planned.
Queensland Corrective Services provides publicly available data:
- statistice
- data
- reviews and reports.
Who can use this service
You can submit a research application if you are:
- an academic employed by a higher education institute
- a masters or PhD student
- a health practitioner or researcher
- a corrective services employee doing post-graduate study.
Don't use this service if:
- you are a prisoner in custody
Instead, ask staff for access to statistical data.
How to submit a research application to Queensland Corrective Services
Step 1: Read the research guidelines
Step 2: Gather your documents
Gather your supporting documents for your research proposal.

Step 3: Email request for permission
You must request permission from the QCS Research and Evaluation Committee (REC) to conduct research.
Email your application and supporting documents to research@corrections.qld.gov.au.
Step 4: Receive the outcome
The QCS Research, Evaluation, Data Insights and Analysis Group (REDIAG) will give you feedback on your application, ideally within 10 business days. It may take up to 20 business days if your application requires consultation with multiple QCS business areas.
Final applications are reviewed and presented at REDIAG committee meetings conducted quarterly.
How long it takes
Processing times begins when a completed application is received. You are encouraged to submit and application well in advance of your research due date.
Standard applications: up to 3 months
