Register as a motor salesperson (used vehicles)
Standard processing times
Applications usually take 4 to 6 weeks to process. It can take longer if you haven’t supplied all the information we need or paid the correct fees.
You must be registered to work for a motor dealer selling used vehicles. It is illegal to work unregistered. You don’t need to be registered to sell new vehicles.
Note: Motor salespeople can only work as employees. Contractors must have a full motor dealer licence.
To be registered you need to:
- be 18 or older and have proof of your identity
- pass a criminal history check
- complete the required training course.
What motor salespeople do
Motor salespeople work for motor dealers. They can:
- acquire used vehicles to sell (including as parts)
- sell used vehicles on behalf others (on consignment)
- sell leased vehicles to lessees under the terms of a lease
- negotiate to buy or sell used vehicles on behalf of others.
They can't:
- sell vehicles as private individuals or for personal profit while acting as an employee of a business
- work as independent operators, including contractors
- deal in motor vehicles on behalf of corporations while serving as the corporation's director
- conduct auctions
- operate trust accounts
- be in charge of a place of business.

Supporting documents
You must attach the following supporting documents to your application (where relevant).
Proof of identity
When you lodge the form, you will need to attach 100 points of certified identification (ID)—the points are explained on the application form formal identification.
Please don't post originals or email us copies of your certified ID.
If you're not an Australian citizen or permanent resident, you need to:
- give us a certified copy of your passport
- have a visa that allows you to work in Australia.
Proof of your qualifications
You will need to attach proof of your qualifications.
Insolvency information (if relevant)
If you are an insolvent under administration, you will need to attach a letter from your current employer, on their company letterhead, that:
- outlines your role in the company
- states if you will be in a position to significantly influence how they manage their business.
You must also explain in writing:
- how you became an insolvent under administration (if it was in your business, please advise the type of business)
- what steps you took to avoid going into insolvency
- how much you owe to each creditor (list them all by name and amount)
- whether you faced any charges relating to the insolvency.

Training
Before you can apply for a motor salesperson registration, you need to complete all of the modules of an Automotive Retail, Service and Repair (AUR) training package through a registered training organisation.
Choose all the modules from either of the tables below. Use the training.gov.au website to find a training provider.
If you're travelling on a student visa, make sure the training organisation you use is registered with the Commonwealth Register of Institutions for Overseas Students. We don't accept training certificates based on credit transfers for international students.
If you've held an equivalent registration or licence within the past 2 years, you don't need to redo the training.
