Ongoing requirements for bodyguards
This page provides information about your ongoing requirements to keeep your bodyguard licence. For example, you must:
- complete ongoing training
- renew your licence before it expires—you can't work on an expired licence
- update your details with the Office of Fair Trading within 7 days of moving.

As a licensed bodyguard, you must keep your knowledge of industry standards and techniques up to date through ongoing training.
- The dates you need to complete ongoing training are provided with your licence—you must complete the required training units before their expiry dates.
- You're responsible for completing required training and submitting your results before the expiry date.
- Your licence can be cancelled if you don't complete your training.
Every 12 months
Your CPR training (HLTAID009—Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation) needs to be refreshed every 12 months.
Every 3 years
You must complete these training modules every 3 years to refresh your knowledge and skills:
- CPPSEC3101 Manage conflict and security risks through negotiation (Find a training provider)
- CPPSEC3121 Control persons using empty hand techniques (Find a training provider)
- and either
- HLTAID011 Provide first aid (Find a training provider)
- HLTAID014 Provide advanced first aid (Find a training provider).
Submit your results
At least 2 months before your licence expires, you must send us your official statement of attainment and record of results as proof you've completed your training. Your training provider will issue these documents.
You can face disciplinary action if you don't lodge them on time. This may results in us cancelling your bodyguard licence.

Criminal history check fee (all renewals)
- $47.10
Renew a security provider licence class 1
Single function
- $178.30 for 1 year
- $526.00 for 3 years
Multiple function
- $228.20 for 1 year
- $675.70 for 3 years
Working while we process your application
If you submit your renewal application and pay the fee before your current licence expires, you can keep working while your renewal is being processed.
You must be able to produce your expired licence and a fee payment receipt (contact us for a receipt).
Expired licences
If your current licence has expired, it can't be renewed—you'll need to apply for a new bodyguard licence. You must not work until you're properly licensed again.
Fingerprinting
If you've never had your fingerprints taken for your security licence, you must do that when you renew your licence.
If your fingerprints are already on record, you won't need to provide them again.
Other ways to renew
We'll post you a renewal notice about 6 weeks before your licence expires. Make sure to tell us if you change your address.

Changes you need to tell us about include:
- where you live—your personal address
- your postal address
- a name change
- if you've been charged or convicted of a disqualifying offence.
If your address details change you need to let us know within 7 days.
