P2 provisional licence
There are 2 types of provisional licences—P1 and P2. The P2 licence is your second provisional licence before you move onto your open licence.
Applying for a P2 licence
Your eligibility to upgrade to a P2 licence is dependent on the age you obtained a P1 licence and the amount of time you have spent on a P1 licence. Queensland driver licence progression is based on age and time spent on a licence before being eligible to upgrade to the next licence type.
If you are 18 or older, you will be automatically upgraded to a P2 licence when you have held your P1 licence for 1 year. A driver licence receipt will be emailed to you, and a new driver licence card will be mailed to your address. You will not need to take any further action for an automatic upgrade.
If you are 25 or older when you pass the practical driving test, you will be granted a P2 licence.
Remember
You must comply with your P1 licence restrictions until your licence is upgraded and you receive either your driver licence receipt or new licence card.
If you were issued a P1 licence prior to 29 March 2021, and have not completed a Queensland Hazard Perception Test at any point in time, you will not be automatically upgraded.
When your licence doesn't automatically upgrade
In most cases, licences are automatically upgraded to a P2. However, certain circumstances may prevent your licence from being upgraded and a new card will not be issued. Your licence will not automatically upgrade to a P2 licence if:
- your licence is expired or will expire within 6 weeks from the date your licence is due to be upgraded.
- you haven't had a digital photo taken and digitised signature recorded in the last 9 years.
- you need a medical certificate to drive and do not have a current certificate recorded with us.
- your licence has been disqualified, cancelled or suspended in Queensland, or any other Australian state or territory.
To upgrade to a P2 licence or open licence you need to apply in person and bring evidence of your identity.
Driving with a P2 licence
On a P2 licence, you no longer have passenger restrictions and you can use a hands-free mobile phone.
When driving you must:
- display green P plates
- only drive vehicles allowed on your licence class
- have your licence with you, either the physical card or on the Digital Licence app, and show it to a police officer when asked
- comply with any conditions on your licence. For example, if you have an ‘S’ condition on your licence you can only drive while wearing corrective lenses
- obey the zero alcohol limit.
You must not:
- drive a high-powered (performance) vehicle
- drive under the influence of illegal or prescription drugs
- accumulate 4 or more demerit points in any 1 year period or you will have to choose between a suspension and a good driving behaviour period
- supervise a learner driver.
