In short
You can use this service to set up direct debit to pay your registration renewal. You can choose from 1, 3, 6 or 12-month registration periods.
You can only set up direct debit online. You cannot set up direct debit over the phone or in person.
See How to set up direct debit for the full process.
What you should know
Paying your registration by direct debit allows your renewal payments to be taken automatically and gives you access to shorter registration periods.
You can set up direct debit any time before your registration is due.
If your registration is due to expire in the next 18 days, you'll need to make a one-time manual payment by card. Your direct debit will start for your next renewal.
You must provide an email address and mobile number to set up direct debit. You can log in to your transport account (My account) to manage your contact details at any time and see previous notifications.
Registration periods
You can choose from 1, 3, 6 or 12-month registration periods for most vehicles and trailers.
If the registration is for a boat, you can only choose a 12-month registration period.
How payments work
You can use a bank account or accepted card to make a direct debit payment. You must use the same account or card for all registrations you enrol in direct debit. Gift cards cannot be used.
You cannot choose your payment date. Payments are debited about 2 weeks before your registration is due (the actual date may change because of weekends and public holidays).
We’ll send an email to remind you of the exact date a few days before the payment is due to be taken. We only make one attempt to debit your card or bank account, for each registration period.
Managing your direct debit
If you have already set up direct debit, you can log in to your transport account (My account) to manage your direct debit details. Under My registrations, you can:
- add or remove registrations on direct debit
- change card or bank account details
- change your compulsory third party (CTP) insurer (if applicable)
- change your registration period (if applicable)
- cancel your direct debit.
Any changes made while a direct debit payment is in progress will apply from your next registration renewal.

How to set up direct debit
Follow these steps or watch a video to set up direct debit online.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nD-LJl_dqBo&t=231s
Step 1: Gather your information
You’ll need your payment information (card or bank account details), and your Queensland driver licence number or customer reference number (CRN) to verify your identity.
See Where to find your customer reference number.
If you need to change your CTP insurer, you'll need to do this before you set up direct debit.
Step 2: Log in and confirm your identity
Log in with your Transport and Main Roads (TMR) customer details or your Queensland Digital Identity (QDI).
Step 3: Enrol in direct debit
You’ll see a list of registrations that are eligible for direct debit. You’ll need to:
- confirm your mobile number and email address (to keep you informed about your payments)
- agree to receive notices and reminders by email
- accept the direct debit terms and conditions.
Step 4: Add your account details
You’ll need to:
- provide your card or bank account details
- accept the Direct Debit Request Service Agreement for Registration Renewals.
Step 5: Add your registrations
Select the registrations you’d like to pay by direct debit and choose how often you’d like to pay your renewal:
- every month (1 month)
- every 3 months
- every 6 months
- every 12 months.
We'll send you an email confirming your direct debit has been set up.
Step 6: Pay your registration renewal (if required)
If your registration is due in the next 18 days, you’ll:
- be prompted to make a one-time, immediate payment by card online to renew your registration
- need to pay the amount due for the direct debit registration period you choose (for example, 1 month).
If you don’t make the one-time payment during the direct debit set up, you’ll need to pay your renewal before the due date. Watch the video for steps on how to pay online. You can also pay in person.

Once you've paid to renew your registration, your direct debit will start for your next renewal. We'll send you a payment receipt by email.
If you don’t pay the renewal before the due date, your registration may not be eligible to be paid by direct debit at your next renewal.
Step 7: Make a payment after an unsuccessful direct debit (if required)
It can take several business days for banks to process direct debit payments and advise if the payment was unsuccessful.
A payment can be unsuccessful if:
- there were not enough funds in your account
- the nominated account is no longer valid
- a certificate of inspection (COI) is required before the registration can be renewed
- the registration renewal has already been paid another way.
If your payment was unsuccessful:
- we will not attempt another direct debit payment for the renewal
- we’ll send you an SMS and email
- you’ll need to pay your registration another way.
If the renewal payment is made before the registration expires, the total amount due will be the same.
Late fee
If the renewal is for a 3, 6 or 12-month registration and payment is made after the registration expires, a late fee will be added to the renewal amount.
If the renewal is for 1-month registration and you pay:
- 1 to 7 days after the registration expires, a late fee will be added to the renewal amount.
- 8 to 25 days after the registration expires, a late fee will be added to the renewal amount. You'll also need to make a catch-up payment. The catch-up payment amount includes your current registration renewal and your next registration renewal. Do not use BPAY, you’ll need to pay online or in person.
- more than 25 days after the registration expires, your registration will be removed from direct debit. We'll email you if this happens. You’ll need to pay for 6 or 12 months of registration and a late fee will be added to the renewal amount. Once you’ve paid your renewal, you can choose to add the registration to direct debit again, to pay for your future renewals.
How long it takes
Setting up direct debit should take 10 to 15 minutes.
How much it costs
There is no cost to set up direct debit. Your bank may charge for direct debit payments.
If you choose a renewal period less than 12 months (1, 3, or 6 months), the cost of your registration will include a surcharge. The surcharge covers updating the vehicle register and the cost of sending registration notices more frequently.
