Lighting

Why accessible lighting matters

Good lighting is essential for creating spaces that everyone can use and enjoy. For people with low vision or sensory sensitivities, the right lighting can make a big difference in how they navigate and experience a space. Poor lighting can cause discomfort, headaches, or even anxiety, especially for people with sensory sensitivities. By designing spaces with inclusive lighting, we can create safe, welcoming, and inclusive environments for all.

What makes lighting accessible?

Accessible lighting is designed to meet the needs of everyone, especially those with vision or sensory challenges. Here are some key features:

  • Bright enough to see clearly: entrances, walkways, and stairs should be well-lit to help people move around safely. For example, Australian standards recommend 150 Lux for walkways and 250 Lux for counters.
  • Minimise glare: lights should be positioned carefully to avoid shining directly into people’s eyes or creating glare on surfaces. This is especially important for people with light sensitivity or low vision.
  • Adjustable lighting: dimmable lights allow people to control brightness levels, which is helpful for those who find bright lights overwhelming.
  • Natural light: where possible, use natural light to create a calming and welcoming atmosphere.
