About the program

The Looking after Country Grant Program provides funding of up to $75,000 to First Nations communities to conserve and manage environmental and cultural heritage on country.

The program supports projects that engage First Nations communities to prepare for and deliver on-ground conservation work on Country and to build organisational capacity to care for Country through strengthened skills, knowledge, and collaborative partnerships.

Project activities funded through the program include (but are not limited to):

  • cultural site management
  • protected species monitoring and conservation
  • revegetation and habitat restoration
  • fire management
  • erosion control
  • inter-generational knowledge exchange on country
  • the development and implementation of country management plans.

Current Round

The 2025 funding round is now closed.

An independent panel is now assessing applications and short-listed applications will be invited to submit a second, more detailed application. Announcement of the successful applicants is expected in early 2026.
