Registering a child who is intersex

Part of the Births and registration topic

Learn about the time you have to register the birth of a child who is born intersex.

Parents must register their child’s birth within 8 weeks (60 days) in most cases.

If your baby’s sex characteristics are different, you have 25 weeks (180 days) to register the birth.

The extra time lets you:

  • talk with your baby’s doctor(s)
  • get support from the intersex community.

This can help you choose the sex to record on the birth certificate.
