What you should know

If you agree to being on a young person’s visits list, your approval will apply to the young person’s current stay in youth detention as well as any future stays.

You should contact the youth detention centre the young person is at if you want to withdraw your approval.

There are certain rules you must follow when visiting a young person in detention.

Who can use this service

You can arrange to visit a youth in detention if you are:

  • family
  • friends
  • an important member of their community like Elders
  • a chaplain or a religious visitor
  • a community group
  • their lawyer
  • their youth justice or child support caseworker
  • an official visitor
  • a non-government agency.

Don't use this service if:

  • the young person is in detention in another state
    Instead, apply in that state or territory.

How to arrange to visit a youth in detention

Follow these steps to arrange a visit.

Step 1:  Find the youth detention centre

You will need to find the youth detention centre where the youth is located.

Step 2: Contact the centre

Phone the centre to confirm its set visiting times and arrange a visit.

You can make special arrangements if you can’t visit during these hours.

Processing times begins when you call the Youth Detention Centre.
