Amber teething necklaces
Amber teething necklaces are a chain of rounded amber chips (fossilised tree resin) that some people put on their children to wear against their skin while they teethe. The necklaces are claimed to help reduce teething pain and other ailments and come in a range of colours.
We don’t support the use of these products due to the safety risk.
Hazards
Teething necklaces pose a serious choking hazard or strangulation risk to babies and toddlers.
Strangulation: The necklace may tighten around your child’s neck, especially while they sleep. Never let your child sleep while wearing a teething necklace.
Choking: The necklace may break if your child chews on it. This would release the small beads, which can get stuck in your child’s throat. Never let your child chew on the necklace.
Tips for safe use
Think about using a less risky form of pain relief. If you want to use an amber teething necklace:
- supervise your child as they wear it
- remove the necklace whenever you leave your child alone (even if it’s only for a short period)
- take the necklace off your child whenever they go to bed (day or night)
- don’t let your child chew on the necklace.
