What you should know

As a registered civil partnership notary, you will need to adhere with the Queensland Government's Civil Partnerships Act 2011.

You must advise us of changes to your contact details or personal circumstances including:

  • occupation
  • business interests
  • criminal history.

You can conduct civil partnership ceremonies in Queensland but cannot solemnise marriages.

Who can use this service

You can register or renew as a civil partnership notary if:
Correct. you are 18 years or older
Correct. you currently live in Queensland.
Don't use this service if:
Incorrect. you are under 18
Incorrect. you live in another state or territory
Instead, apply in that state or territory.

How to register or renew as a civil partnership notary

Step 1: Gather your documents

Proof of identity

You need to gather 3 forms of proof of identification (ID) documents, including proof of home address.

Supporting documents

If you are not already a registered civil marriage celebrant or a renewing civil partnership notary, you must provide:

  • a current nationwide criminal history report from the Queensland Police Service
  • attach personal references from 2 adults (over 18 years) who are not members of your family.

Translating documents

If your documents are not in English, you need to get them translated.

Step 2: Certify copies of your documents

You must get copies of your ID documents and supporting documents certified by an authorised person.

New applicants only

If you are not already a registered civil marriage celebrant or a registered civil partnership notary, we will email you an online assessment for you to complete.

Step 6: Receive confirmation

We will notify you if your application has been approved and advise that you are now registered as a civil partnership notary.

Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 8.30am–4.30pm.

Closed public holidays.

Bring with you:

  • certified copies of your ID and supporting documents
  • completed printed application form
  • payment method.

Step 5: Complete an online assessment

New applicants only

If you are not already a registered civil marriage celebrant or a registered civil partnership notary, we will email you an online assessment for you to complete.

Step 6: Receive confirmation

We will notify you if your application has been approved and advise that you are now registered as a civil partnership notary.

Processing times start when an application with all required documents and payment has been received.
