Give feedback about a JP or Cdec

You can give feedback or make a complaint about a Justice of the Peace (JP) or Commissioner for Declarations (Cdec) in Queensland.

JPs and Cdecs must follow the JP and Cdec Code of Conduct made under the Justices of the Peace and Commissioners for Declarations Act 1991.

This ensures high standards of professionalism and consistency in their practices.

Complaints must relate to professional conduct, behaviour or obligations when providing witnessing services.

Complaints may also be considered if they are about personal behaviour, private dealings or disputes related to the role.

Complaints about criminal conduct or behaviour should be reported to police.

If the JP or Cdec is convicted of a criminal offence or an adverse finding is made against them, their appointment may be reviewed.

How to give feedback

Step 1: Complete and submit the online form

Complete the Department of Justice complaints form and submit.

Provide relevant details, including:

  • the nature of your feedback
  • specific information about the JP or Cdec, such as their name
  • details of the issue
  • your personal contact details—if you don't provide contact details, we may not be able to resolve the matter.

Step 2: Receive acknowledgment

Your feedback will be acknowledged within 3 business days of being received.

You will be notified within 3 weeks if your feedback cannot be dealt with.

Step 3: Feedback assessed and investigated

If a complaint is accepted, the JP or Cdec will have an opportunity to respond.

Step 4: Receive the outcome

Compliments

Feedback will be recorded and used to improve services or acknowledge good performance.

Complaints

The responses to complaints may include:

  • recording the complaint without further action
  • sending a reminder letter to the JP or Cdec about correct procedures
  • sending a warning letter to the JP or Cdec advising that further breaches may result in a review of their appointment
  • reviewing the JP or Cdec's appointment, which may lead to removal from office.

Disciplinary matters are confidential and you will not be notified about the outcome of the investigation.

If a JP or Cdec is removed from office, this information will be made public on the Queensland Government website.
