If you want to legally change your record of sex, you must follow certain rules.

Use these rules when you change your record of sex.

You must

Correct. Apply to the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
Correct.Be 16 years or older.
Correct. Live in Queensland and lived here for the past 12 months if you were not born in Queensland.
Correct. Have written approval from a Chief Executive of Corrective Services or Police Commissioner if:
  • you are in the custody of Corrective Services or a released prisoner under the Dangerous Prisoners (Sexual Offenders) Act 2003
  • you are a reportable offender under the Child Protection (Offender Reporting and Offender Prohibition Order) Act 2004.

You cannot

Incorrect. Change your record of sex if you already changed it the past 12 months.
Incorrect. Choose a prohibited sex descriptor.
Incorrect. Change your first name to a prohibited name.
