You can use this service to:

  • change your record of sex.

You must submit your completed application form, ID and supporting documents (if needed), by post or in person.

What you should know

If you were born in Queensland or overseas, you can change your first and middle names at the same time.

If you were born in another state or territory, you need to apply to change your name in that state or territory.

There are rules about:

The application fee that you pay does not include a certificate. You may choose to order one and pay a fee.

If you were born or adopted in Queensland, you can choose to get a:

  • linking birth certificate shows your new sex and name on the front and your previous details on the back
  • birth certificate with sex shows your new sex and name and does not show any previous details
  • birth certificate without sex shows your new first names and does not show any previous details or details of sex. This may not be suitable for changing your ID.

If you were born or adopted outside Queensland, you can choose either a:

  • linking recognised details certificate shows your new sex and name on the front and your previous details on the back
  • recognised details certificate shows your new sex and name and does not show any previous details. This may not be suitable for changing your ID.

Who can use this service

You can apply to change your record of sex if:
Correct. you are the person
Correct. you were born or adopted in Queensland or
Correct. you were born or adopted outside of Queensland, live in Queensland and have lived here for the past 12 months or more.
Don’t use this service if:
Incorrect. you are under 16
Insteadapply to change a child’s record of sex.

      Step 6: Receive the certificate<\\/h3>

      Once the application has been approved, if you ordered a certificate it will be posted to you.<\\/p>

      You can then update your name on ID documents and with organisations.<\\/p>

      Your application may not be approved if:<\\/p>

      • you don’t meet the rules<\\/li>
      • have not included the right documents.<\\/li><\\/ul>

        You will not receive a refund if:<\\/p>

        • your application is refused<\\/li>

              If your application is approved, the new record of sex will be noted in the register.<\\/p>

              You will be sent your updated birth certificate or recognised details certificate and\\/or your change of name certificate.<\\/p>

              Sometimes requests to change record of sex are refused if they:<\\/p>

                  How long it takes

                  Processing times start when an application with all required documents and payment has been received.

                  Standard application: up to 10 business days

                  Applications missing any required information or documents will take longer.

                  Allow extra time for public holidays and postage.

                  How much it costs

                  The fee you pay is for you to submit your application and for the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages to review it.

                  • Application fee: $130.40
                  • Each official certificate: $56.20
                  • Official linking birth certificate package (1 official linking birth certificate plus 1 official birth certificate with sex): $112.40

                  Regular postage is free.

                  You can choose other delivery types:

                  • Registered post (recommended): $8.10
