You can end your civil partnership registered in Queensland. Apply to the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriage and pay a fee.

You can use this service to:
- end a civil partnership.
You must submit your completed application form, ID and supporting documents (if needed), by post or in person.
What you should know
There are rules for civil partnership that you must follow when you want to end a civil partnership registered in Queensland.
You or your partner (or both of you) can apply to end the civil partnership.
When you apply to end your civil partnership, it will not be registered until 90 full days after a compliant application is submitted and paid for.
This is the termination period and can’t be shortened.
If you require a record of this change, you will need to submit a separate certificate application form at the same time. Any certificate ordered will be posted to you after the termination period.

How to apply to end a civil partnership
Choose how to submit and follow the steps.
Step 1: Gather your documents
Proof of identity
You need to gather 3 forms of proof of identification (ID) documents including proof of home address.

Translating documents
If your documents are not in English, you need to get them translated.
Step 2: Certify copies of your documents
You must get copies of your ID documents and supporting documents certified by an authorised person.

Online form - end a civil partnership
Complete the online form including payment method, then print the form.
PDF form - end a civil partnership
Download, print and complete the form by hand. Include payment method on the form.

To order an updated civil partnership certificate at the same time, download and print the form and fill in by hand. Include the payment method on the form.
Step 4: Individual applicant statutory declaration
Individual applicants must include a statutory declaration stating:
- you served a copy of the application to your partner
- how you served it to them.
Download, print and complete the form by hand.
Step 5: Get a witness signature
You must have all signatures witnessed by an authorised person.

By law, a civil partnership will not end before 90 full days from the time we receive your correctly completed application, including the documents and the fee. This is known as the termination period.
Once your application is approved, your civil partnership will be terminated. If you ordered a certificate it will be posted to you.
Your application may not be approved if you:
- don’t meet the rules
- have not provided the right documents.
You will not receive a refund if:
- your application is refused
- you cancel the application after we have reviewed it.
You can submit your application at any Queensland Magistrates Court or QGAP office (except for the Brisbane Magistrates Court).

How long it takes
Processing times start when an application with all required documents and payment has been received and the 90-day termination period has ended.
Urgent application: not available
Applications missing any required information or documents will take longer.
Allow extra time for public holidays and postage.
How much it costs
The fee you pay is for you to submit your application and for the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages to review it.

You can also choose to order:

Regular postage is free.
You can choose other delivery types:
- Registered post (recommended): $8.10
- Express post: $8.55
- International registered post: $18.55
