You can apply to become a Justice of the Peace (JP) or Commissioner for Declarations (Cdec) in Queensland.

What you should know
You must submit your application to become a JP or Cdec within 2 years of completing the required training course.
You will need to provide supporting documents including a statement of attainment from your training course provider, character references and proof of Australian citizenship (if you were born overseas).
Who can use this service
You can apply to become a JP or Cdec if you:
- are 18 years or older
- are an Australian citizen
- live in Queensland and are enrolled to vote here
- have 2 character references on the approved form
- consent to a criminal history check by police
- agree to follow the code of conduct for JPs and Cdecs
- have completed the relevant JP and Cdec training course.
Don't use this service if:
- you are insolvent under administration

How to apply to become a JP or Cdec
Follow these steps to apply to become a JP or Cdec.
Step 1: Complete the training
There is certain training you must complete to apply.
Step 2: Gather your documents
You will need to submit the following documents with your application:
- a statement of attainment from your training course
- 2 written references from suitable referees, written on the approved referee form
- proof of Australian citizenship (if you were born overseas)
- a completed application for an exemption form (if you have a disqualifying conviction)
- a completed fee waiver form (if you are applying to have the application fee waived).
Step 3: Complete the online form
- Complete the online apply to become a JP or Cdec form.
- Upload all required documents to your application.
- Enter your full name (including middle names) exactly as it appears on the Queensland Electoral Roll. If you do not include your Queensland Electoral Roll information there will be delays to processing your application.
Step 4: Pay the fee and submit your application
Pay the application fee online by Visa or Mastercard.

You must submit the waiver form at the same time you submit your completed JP or Cdec application.
Step 5: Nomination and assessment
Your application will be sent to your State Member of Parliament (MP) for their consideration. They may request to interview you before nominating you for appointment.
Once nominated, you application will be assessed against the Justices of the Peace and Commissioners for Declarations Act 1991.
Step 6: Notification of outcome
You will be notified if:
- there are any issues with your application, or
- your application is approved.
Step 7: Take the oath of affirmation of office
If your application is approved, you must take an oath or affirmation of office before you can begin your duties as a JP or Cdec.
How long it takes
The assessment process takes approximately 3 months.

Application fee: $149.80 (non-refundable)
