You can upgrade your Justice of the Peace (JP) or Commissioner of declaration (Cdec) appointment type if you're already registered in Queensland.

You can use this service to upgrade your JP or Cdec appointment type to a Cdec or JP (Qualified).

What you should know
If you are a JP (Cdec) you can upgrade to either a Cdec or a JP (Qualified).
If you are a Cdec you can upgrade to a JP (Qualified).
If you have a disqualifying conviction, you must attach a completed application for exemption from a disqualifying conviction to your application.
Who can use this service
You can upgrade a JP or Cdec appointment type if:
- you are registered as a JP(Cdec) in Queensland
- you are registered as a Cdec in Queensland
Don't use this service if:
- you are not registered as a JP or Cdec in Queensland
Instead, apply to become a JP or Cdec.
How to upgrade a JP or Cdec appointment type
Choose the appointment type and follow the steps.
Step 1: Gather your documents
Get a copy of your statement of attainment from the course Community Justice Services (Justice of the Peace [Qualified]) 11282NAT.
If you are applying for a fee waiver, you will need to attach the completed application for a fee waiver and required supporting documents with your application.
Step 2: Complete the form
Complete the online form and upload your documents.
Attachments must be less than 5MB in total. Approved file types are .doc .docx .pdf .odf .jpg .jpeg .bmp .tif .tiff .png .xls .xlsx
Step 3: Pay the fee
You can pay the upgrade fee online by Visa or Master card.
You will need to upload the receipt with your complete application.
Step 3: Nomination and assessment
Once your completed application is received by the Justices of the Peace Branch it will then be sent to your member of parliament (MP) to nominate you for the new appointment. The MP may contact you to arrange an interview before your nomination.
When your MP nominates you, we will assess your application against the relevant sections of the Act and the Justices of the Peace and Commissioners for Declarations Regulation 2017.
Step 4: Receive the outcome
Once your application is approved, you’ll receive a letter confirming your upgrade.
Step 5: Take the oath or affirmation
You will then need to take an oath or affirmation of office in front of a Justice of the Peace or another Cdec.
