Justices of the Peace (JP) or Commissioners for Declarations (Cdec) can change their name on the JP register by filling out an online form.

You must update your details with the Justices of the Peace Unit within 30 days of changing your name.
This time limit is set by Section 22 of the Justices of the Peace and Commissioners for Declarations Act 1991.
You will need to provide proof of your name change.
Who can use this service
You can change your name on the JP register if:
- you are currently registered as a JP or Cdec in Queensland
- your name has changed, and you have the required supporting documentation.
Don't use this service if:
- you are registered as a JP or Cdec in another state or territory
Instead, apply in that state or territory.
How to change your name on the JP register
Follow these steps to change your name on the JP register.
Step 1: Complete the form
Fill in the online form.
Step 2: Gather your documents
Attach a scanned copy of a document that proves your name change.
If you have changed your name by:
- marriage—you will need to attach a copy of your marriage certificate
- separation or divorce—you will need to attach a copy of either your marriage certificate or your birth certificate
- deed poll or through the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages—you will need to attach a copy of the deed poll documents or change of name certificate from the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
Step 3: Submit your form
- Acknowledge all details are true and correct.
- Acknowledge you have read and agree to the privacy statement.
- Submit the form.
How long it takes
We will contact you within 1 week of receiving your request to confirm your name has been updated on the register.
